There is a wide spread history of amethyst crystals being used for healing and magnifying psychic energy. It has been called the long distance healer. In traditional Chinese medicine, ground amethyst is prescribed for stomach pains and bad dreams. Amethysts were thought to induce a sober mind. The name is derived from the Greek word Amethystos, which means "against drunkenness." Amethyst is still worn as an amulet against drunkenness. It was a favorite gemstone of high officials of the Christian Church. Drinking vessels were sometimes made of amethyst. Water for watered down wine served in these vessels looked like wine but without the intoxicating effects. Therefore the name "Bishops stone." Metaphysical Amethyst keeps one in touch with the more noble and spiritual side. It helps to instill the highest ideals and urges one to do the best thing even if it is not the most self-serving. History
The 12th century nun, Hildegard von Bingen wrote that a person who has spots on his face should dampen an amethyst with his saliva and rub it over the spots. Also, he should heat water over a fire and hold that stone over the water. The sweat coming out of it should b mixed with the water. Then he should place the stone in the water and wash his face with the water. If a fresh tumor is swelling on one’s body, he should dampen the amethyst with his saliva and touch the tumor all over with it. The tumor will grow smaller and disappear. Also, the serpent and adder flee this stone and avoid the place where they know amethysts to be.
Amethyst is said to cure impatience and alleviates feelings of victimization. It has a calming effect, balancing high-energy, highly driven or highly creative people. It eliminates chaos, and helps keep one grounded.
Amethyst is said to help with diseases associated with any form of drunkenness, as well as giving aid and healing to those who are alcoholics. Claimed to have the highest vibration of all gems, amethyst can bring about the well being of the entire planet.
Amethyst allows in only positive energies, deep purple or very pale being the most powerful. It is said to be highly protective and should be carried or worn when around negative or hostile people. It is associated with the sixth chakra, the third eye, and is excellent for meditation and aura work
